Digital switch-over: NBC, NigComSat roll out hybrid broadcast plan, assure Nigerians of wider coverage

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat) have unveiled a revamped Digital Switch-Over (DSO) strategy, saying it is designed to expand nationwide broadcasting access, remove entry barriers, and ensure a financially sustainable media ecosystem.

At a joint press briefing in Abuja on Monday, NBC Director-General Charles Ebuebu said the redesigned framework addresses structural challenges that previously slowed Nigeria’s transition to full digital broadcasting.

He explained that the new system is intended to unify broadcast delivery while improving access to free-to-air channels and strengthening the country’s creative and media industries.

Ebuebu ruled out the need for Nigerians to purchase new or specialised decoders, stressing that the FreeTV platform is compatible with existing digital receivers already in circulation.

He said an estimated 10 million DVB-compliant devices can connect directly to the platform, enabling households to access over 100 television channels without subscription payments.

According to him, Nigeria’s digital migration has now shifted from a single Digital Terrestrial Television structure to a hybrid model integrating terrestrial broadcast, satellite transmission, and internet-based streaming.

He added that viewers will also be able to access content through mobile applications, allowing television services to be streamed on smartphones and other connected devices.

On satellite infrastructure, NigComSat Managing Director Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen said Nigeria’s current communications satellite remains operational and is projected for replacement in 2028, with preparatory processes already ongoing.

She disclosed that two global technology firms were selected following a rigorous two-year evaluation process, with contingency plans in place to guarantee uninterrupted service delivery.

She further noted that the replacement satellite will remain in the same orbital position, ensuring continuity of service without requiring users to adjust or replace their existing equipment.

Journalists also toured the DTH facility in Abuja, where engineers demonstrated real-time satellite transmission operations, showcasing how multiple television channels are compiled and delivered through NigComSat’s network.
