Prince Harry delays decision on Archie and Lilibet’s titles ‘so they can choose’
It has been reported that Prince Harry has delayed the decision to change his children’s titles following the Queen’s death, after a “brief discussion” with King Charles III
Prince Harry is reported to have halted any decision-making on the new titles of his children following the Queen’s death so “they can choose” themselves in the future.
Harry’s two children Archie and Lilibet, shared with his wife Meghan Markle, are entitled to be named prince and princess as grandchildren of the new monarch.
No change in their titles has been publicly announced however, as the Royal Family’s official website still lists Harry and Meghan’s children as Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor.
This delay comes as it has been reported by The Times that Harry has made the decision to wait for his children to choose their own titles.
The publication stated that Harry made his wishes clear as he briefly discussed the matter with King Charles III after the Queen’s death.
The Times reported: “Harry is understood to have expressed his desire to let his children decide when they are older, and to have emphasised that would only be possible if they were allowed to retain their titles now.
“The conversation is understood to have ended unresolved, and to have left the Sussexes dismayed.”
This news follows reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex fear their two children might be stripped of their titles altogether, after Queen Margarethe of Denmark stripped the HRH titles from four of her grandchildren.
According to Royal editor Roya Nikkah, these fears stirred after Charles’ failed acknowledgement of his grandchildren’s elevated titles last month.
Ms Nikkah said that Harry and Meghan are “understood to fear the King may strip Archie and Lilibet of their titles, after his reluctance immediately to recognise their elevated status after the Queen’s death.”
Royal expert Katie Nicholl has predicted that any future title changes for Archie and Lilibet will only come after Harry and Charles have repaired the “trust” in their relationship.
Ms Nicholl explained: “One of the interesting things that came out in all of this was the speculation about titles, and Archie and Lilibet…whether they would officially be acknowledged as Prince and Princess, the titles owed to them when Charles became King.
“They remain ‘Miss’ and ‘Master’ currently [on the Royal Website]. And I’m told that that is a very clear signal from the King. He’s willing to give those titles, but it comes with a caveat, and that caveat is trust.
“They have to know that they can trust the [Sussex] family.”
