Nigerian national record holder and Olympian Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi has pledged ₦550,000 in prize money for the men’s javelin throw at the Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet, strengthening efforts to reward performance and promote athletics development in Nigeria.

The competition is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, with the sponsorship set to reward the top eight finishers in the men’s javelin event.

Nnamdi, one of Nigeria’s leading javelin throwers, has enjoyed an impressive career on the international stage, winning medals at major championships and setting new standards for the country in the discipline.

He won bronze at the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, becoming the first Nigerian athlete to win a medal in a field event at the championships since Esther Aghatise in 2002.

He subsequently claimed gold at the 2023 African Games in Accra, Ghana, and silver at the 2024 African Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, before representing Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

On April 17, 2026, Nnamdi further cemented his place in Nigerian athletics history by setting a national record of 84.68 metres at the Tom Jones Memorial in Florida, United States.

His collegiate career has also yielded significant success. While competing for the Baylor Bears, he won three Big 12 Outdoor Javelin titles between 2022 and 2024 before transferring to the Texas A&M Aggies, where he secured the 2026 SEC Outdoor Javelin title.

Under the sponsorship arrangement, the winner will receive ₦200,000, while the second-place finisher will earn ₦100,000 and the bronze medallist ₦75,000.

The fourth-place athlete will receive ₦50,000, with ₦40,000 allocated to fifth place, ₦35,000 to sixth, ₦30,000 to seventh and ₦20,000 to eighth.

The total prize pool stands at ₦550,000, ensuring that financial rewards extend beyond the podium finishers.

Athletic Heat CEO, Eseroghene Oguma, expressed appreciation to Nnamdi for backing the competition, noting that contributions from athletes and sports personalities help reward excellence and inspire emerging talents.

The sponsorship also highlights Nnamdi’s support for the development of Nigerian athletics, using his experience at the highest level of competition to contribute to opportunities for athletes at home.

The Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet will bring together athletes for a celebration of the competition’s decade-long journey and its continued contribution to the growth of athletics in Nigeria.
