“Embrace Skill acquisition, entrepreneurship Devt to break barriers of unemployment” – Gov. Diri urges Corps members

The Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has charged the 2026 Batch C Stream I Corps Members deployed to the state to embrace the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme to acquire practical skills that would break unemployment barriers and enhance their prospects beyond the service year.

He also urged the Corps members to adopt discipline, prioritise their safety and take full advantage of skills acquisition opportunities throughout their service year.

Governor Diri gave the charge during the Swearing-In Ceremony for the 2026 Batch C Stream I Orientation Course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Boro Town, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.

Represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Alfred Kemepade Nimizigha, the Governor congratulated the Corps Members on the successful completion of their academic pursuits and their response to the call to national service, describing their participation in the Scheme as a demonstration of patriotism and commitment to national unity.

He highlighted some of the State Government’s educational initiatives, particularly its emphasis on vocational skills, science and technology, and encouraged the Corps Members to take advantage of available skills acquisition and entrepreneurship opportunities to become self-reliant.

The Governor also urged them to respect the culture and traditions of their host communities, learn local languages, appreciate indigenous cuisine and deepen their understanding of the history and traditions of the Ijaw people.

He cautioned the Corps Members against partisan politics, cultism and other social vices capable of jeopardising their future, while urging them to conduct themselves responsibly and contribute meaningfully to the development of their host communities.

Earlier, the NYSC Bayelsa State Coordinator, Mr. Samuel Amaramiro Pepple, said the three-week Orientation Course was designed to introduce Corps Members to the ideals, objectives and programmes of the National Youth Service Corps.

Pepple encouraged them to participate actively in all camp activities, including lectures, drills, sports, dance and drama, with particular emphasis on the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.

He further urged the Corps Members to understand and appreciate the values, traditions and culture of the people of Bayelsa State, while expressing appreciation to the State Government and other stakeholders for their continued support of the Scheme.

He described young Nigerians as critical stakeholders in the nation’s future, he urged the corps members to embrace patriotism and peaceful coexistence, noting that the NYSC Scheme provides a unique platform for young people from diverse backgrounds to interact, build relationships and contribute to national development.

On self-development, Pepple encouraged them to take advantage of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme to acquire practical skills that would enhance their prospects beyond the service year.

He further reminded the corps members that the Orientation Course is designed to instil discipline, leadership and teamwork, urging them to obey camp rules, remain punctual and participate actively in camp activities.

Pepple expressed confidence in their ability to make a positive impact during the service year, urging the them to remain focused, uphold the ideals of the NYSC and seize opportunities for personal growth and meaningful contribution to society.
