Defence Headquarters collaborates with Nigeria Anti-Doping Centre to combat doping

All is now set for the training and certification of doping control officers and chaperones as part of efforts to sanitize Nigerian athletes

The training being sponsored by the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. O.O Oluyede is a significant step towards strengthening clean sport in Nigeria.

Speaking to osprimetv via the telephone, the Executive Secretary, International Military Sports Council – Defence Headquarters Abuja, Lieutenant Colonel Okou Femedein Timipre, confirmed that the 3-day training will run from 8-10 July 2026 at the Conference Hall of the Defence Headquarters Annex, Asokoro, Abuja

Okou said the collaboration was necessary because of the Military’s involvement in sports development, stressing that the goal is to create and raise anti-doping awareness for a sustainable dope-free culture among athletes some of whom the Military has produced.

“I was appointed Chairman, Armed Forces Anti-Doping Committee by the CDS with the objective of acting as the Institutional Anti-Doping Committee for the AFN. The committee supports global fight against doping in sports through the implementation of an institutional Anti-Doping programme that is compliant with the provisions outlined in the code and its supporting International Standard documents.

Thus, it ensures adherence to the principle of fair play, health, and welfare of athletes through detection, deterrence, and prevention of the use of prohibited substances and methods in the sporting environment. Our vision is to promote clean sports among stakeholders, trainers, and athletes. Hence, this training focuses on advocacy, education, and drug testing.” He said

Lt Col Okou appreciated the sports loving nature of Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Oluyede, to see that sports is developed in the military and even beyond.

He described the CDS focus on enhancing national security through various sporting initiatives, including sponsorship of military personnel to international advanced courses and programmes as an ‘inspiring nation-building policy’.

Okou also commended the role and leadership qualities of Rear Admiral C. J Kachim – Chief of Defence Administration and Air Vice Marshal, the Director of Sports Defence Headquarters toward the actualization of the training

“A humble gratitude to the CDS for sponsoring this training. He has passionately and frequently championed the growth of sports within the armed forces, having strongly supported the sponsorship and participation of Nigerian military personnel in international training programmes and courses.

He strongly advocates for grassroots initiatives — such as schools and barracks tournaments to nurture future leaders, innovators, and athletes.

Special recognition and appreciation to Rear Admiral C. J Kachim – Chief of Defence Administration and Air Vice Marshal, the Director of Sports Defence Headquarters, for playing crucial roles to see that this programme becomes a reality.” Okou stated.
