NDC Removes Kwankwaso’s Candidates in Kano Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has replaced a number of candidates earlier put forward by the Kwankwasiyya bloc in Kano State, in what appears to be a fresh move to enforce a political agreement reached between both sides ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Politics Nigeria reports that the changes were contained in an internal party document reportedly signed by the Kano State Chairman of the party, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga.

The revised list was said to have been prepared to reflect a power-sharing arrangement between the NDC structure in the state and the Kwankwasiyya movement.

The development is expected to reopen discussions over the sharing of party positions as political activities gather momentum ahead of the next election cycle.

According to the document, copies were forwarded to the party’s national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman, Alhaji Muhammadu Rabi’u Sabo Bakinzuwo.

Under the updated arrangement, Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani was approved for Kumbotso Federal Constituency, while Nasiru Ali Ahmed emerged for Nassarawa. Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id was listed for Kano Municipal, with Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim taking the ticket for Doguwa/Tudun Wada.

The party also approved Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa, Rimin Gado and Tofa Federal Constituency, Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila and Takai, while Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata was named for Gwale Federal Constituency.

Beyond the federal constituencies, adjustments were also made to some State House of Assembly tickets, including those for Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.

Party sources said the decision was linked to an earlier understanding between the NDC leadership and the Kwankwasiyya bloc over the distribution of political offices and elective positions.

The arrangement reportedly provided for a 60-40 sharing formula, with the Kwankwasiyya faction allocated 60 per cent of positions and the existing NDC structure retaining 40 per cent.

However, some leaders within the party were said to have raised concerns that the initial allocation of tickets did not properly reflect the agreement, creating tension among stakeholders.

Speaking on the matter, the party’s spokesperson, Comrade Ibrahim Waya, defended the action, saying the leadership acted to preserve unity within the party.

“There was an understanding on the 60-40 sharing formula between the party leadership and Senator Kwankwaso. The action was taken urgently to avoid crisis within the party,” Waya said.
