Kaizer Chiefs: Ex-Super Eagles goalie weighs in on coaching situation at 13-time South African kings

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has shared his perspective on the ongoing coaching situation at Kaizer Chiefs.

​The Amakhosi ended the previous Betway Premiership campaign in third place, finishing 15 points behind winners Orlando Pirates.

It was a disappointing finish for a side that had aimed to challenge for the league title. Following the end of the campaign, the club parted ways with co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, but they have yet to appoint a replacement with the new season still months away.

​Akpeyi, spent a significant part of his career in the South African league playing for Chippa United, Kaizer Chiefs, Marumo Gallants, and Mbabane Swallows. And he remains a respected figure at Naturena. He expressed support for the club’s decision to move on from Kaze and Ben Youssef.

​“Sometimes it depends on the decision the management wants to make to see how they can solidify other areas of the team. So, this can boil down to decision-making,” Akpeyi stated, as per FARPost.

​“Yes, you can say it turns out to be for the good or something else. But I would like to believe that the management knows what they are doing, and they o forward to the best for the team. I’m very sure they will be able to get a coach who will take the team further.”

​Daniel Akpeyi has been out of the limelight for some time. After leaving his last club, Marumo Gallants, following the expiration of his contract, he has been without a club since last year.

​Recently, he confirmed his retirement and his transition into coaching, noting that he is currently in the process of obtaining his coaching license. It remains to be seen whether he will pursue a career as a goalkeeper coach or as a head coach.

Apkeyi made 19 appearances for the Super Eagles before his retirement and was a member of the squad that secured a bronze medal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
