Fubara Warns Opobo Royal Family Against Inheritance Disputes at King Jaja’s Funeral

The governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has urged members of the Opobo royal family to avoid conflict over inheritance following the death of their monarch.

He made the appeal during a funeral service held at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Opobo Town in honour of the late Dandeson Douglas Jaja.

Governor Fubara warned that disputes over assets could lead to division and instability within the family, describing such actions as a “recipe for chaos and anarchy”.

He encouraged the children of the late king to focus instead on building their own success, stressing that inheritance alone does not guarantee achievement.

“You inherit assets, not success. Success is something you work for,” he said, adding that unity within the family would better preserve the legacy of the monarch.

The governor paid tribute to King Jaja, describing him as a peaceful leader who ruled with “class and dignity” and guided the Opobo Kingdom to notable progress during his reign. He said the late monarch’s life, which spanned 83 years, should be celebrated rather than mourned.

Fubara also called on the Amanyanabo-elect to lead with wisdom and chart a fresh path for the kingdom, rather than attempting to replicate the legacy of his predecessor.

In a sermon at the service, Emmanuel Oko Jaja reminded mourners of the temporary nature of life, urging them to avoid pride and materialism. He emphasised the importance of spiritual reflection and faith, noting that lasting fulfilment lies beyond worldly possessions.
