Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule

The Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the suspension of the Local Government Election citing a Federal High Court Abuja Judgment.

The House agreed to immediately transmit its resolution to Register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) via a ‘strong worded’ letter.

This is after members of the Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday, staged a protest march to the Department of State Security office and the Government House both in Port Harcourt the Rivers state capital.

Speaking at the DSS office, a PDP stakeholder in Rivers State, Aron Chukwuemeka said the major reason for the protest was to say no to the October 5 Local Government Elections.

On the other hand, the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo called for the Local Government Election scheduled for Saturday, to be conducted in adherence with the rule of law and subsisting judgments that enabled the exercise.

The Assembly Speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo while speaking during plenary on Thursday, said it aligned with the position of the Executive Arm of Government and Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, in ensuring that a proper constitution of duly elected political leadership at the local government level is a reality in the state.

The LG elections are set to be held on the 5th of October, 2024.
