Ex-Chelsea man Mikel Obi reveals the Arsenal record Man City boss Pep Guardiola would ‘love to break’

Former Chelsea star John Mikel Obi has suggested that Pep Guardiola harbours a strong desire to surpass Arsenal’s legendary Invincibles record.

Since taking the reins at Manchester City in 2016, Guardiola has amassed an impressive array of achievements, securing the Premier League title six times, including a remarkable run of four consecutive seasons.

Guardiola’s dominance reached new heights in the 2022/2023 season when his City side clinched a historic Treble, adding the FA Cup and Champions League to their domestic triumph.

However, one accolade has eluded the Spaniard: leading a team through an entire Premier League season unbeaten — a feat last accomplished by Arsenal under manager Arsene Wenger in the 2003/2004 campaign.

Speaking on his podcast, Mikel Obi, who was commenting on Arsenal legend Robert Pires, reflected on the challenge of surpassing the Invincibles’ record.

“Robert Pires was part of the Invincibles team. And I don’t know if that record will ever be broken in the Premier League. I think that is one record that Pep Guardiola will really, really love to break,” Mikel stated.

Arsenal’s 2003/2004 season is etched in history as a monumental achievement.

The Gunners navigated the entire league campaign without tasting defeat, securing 26 wins and 12 draws. Despite falling short in cup competitions, their unbeaten run remains unparalleled, earning them the nickname “The Invincibles.”

Guardiola, like many great Premier League managers before him, including Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, has yet to replicate this extraordinary accomplishment.

As the 2024/25 season unfolds, the dream of emulating Arsenal’s Invincibles continues to drive Guardiola and his City squad, who fell just three defeats short last season.
