Igali Arrives in Kazakhstan for UWW Bureau Meetings, Elective Congress, World Wrestling Championships

Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development and United World Wrestling (UWW) Bureau Member, Hon. Baraladei Daniel Igali, has arrived in Astana, Kazakhstan, for a series of high-level engagements ahead of the 2026 World Wrestling Championships.
Igali’s visit coincides with the global wrestling competition and will see him participate in two UWW Bureau meetings and the organisation’s Elective Congress scheduled for October 23, 2026.
The meetings are expected to address critical issues concerning the governance, administration, development and future direction of international wrestling, with decisions that could shape the sport’s growth and competitiveness globally.
As a member of the UWW Technical Commission, Igali is expected to contribute to deliberations on Olympic qualification pathways, competition regulations and policies aimed at ensuring fairness and equal opportunities for wrestling nations across the world.
The former Olympic wrestling champion has consistently advocated equitable representation and resource distribution in international sports, particularly for developing countries. He believes that limited funding and inadequate infrastructure should not prevent African nations and other less-endowed countries from competing effectively at the highest level.
During the Elective Congress, Igali will also advocate institutional stability, continuity of purpose and sustainable development programmes to strengthen wrestling administration and promote the long-term growth of the sport internationally.
Beyond his international responsibilities, the Bayelsa sports commissioner considers the engagements an opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge and experience that could further strengthen sports development in the state, particularly in technical administration, athlete development, competition management and global best practices in sports governance.
The experience is also expected to contribute to Bayelsa State’s preparations for hosting the 2028 National Sports Festival, as the state government continues to pursue its broader sports development agenda and investment in sporting infrastructure.
Igali expressed profound appreciation to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, for his continued support and understanding of the importance of international engagements, noting that the opportunities they provide can enhance sports administration and development in the state.
Meanwhile, Team Nigeria will be seeking to end its three-year medal drought at the World Wrestling Championships, with the country’s wrestlers hoping to reclaim a place on the global podium.
Igali reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that his responsibilities within the international wrestling governing body translate into meaningful benefits for sports development in Bayelsa State and Nigeria at large.
