Spyro: I got bank loan to finance my song with Davido
Spyro, the fast-rising singer, has recalled his struggles while with his former record label.
In an interview with Cool 96.9 FM, Spyro said he took a loan from the bank to finance a song he featured Davido, the Afrobeats star — some years ago — while he was under the record label.
“I was signed to a label couple of years back. I think in 2017. I was signed to Upfront and Personal, the music label, owned by Paulo,” he said.
“Paulo is a fantastic person, but at that particular time when I got signed to the label, Paulo didn’t have my time.
“He has his hands full. He is a busy man and is always flying here and there. And I was just there stuck. I was there for two years and nothing was happening.
“I was there for two years. No form of promotion whatsoever. And everyone out there was looking at me that ‘you there, you’re signed to a billionaire, you should be popping. People that were funding me before stopped because they felt like ‘you are now signed to Paulo. So why would I fund you?
“So, at some point, I will just stay back home and cry and be like what kind of life is this? I had parents and responsibilities, and money wasn’t coming forth from any angle. It was very frustrating.”
The ‘Who Is Your Guy’ crooner said he decided to get the loan to finance the Mayorkun and Davido-assisted song titled ‘Funke’.
He added the song, however, failed to live up to expectations.
Spyro said he struggled for three years to repay the loan he took.
“When I dropped ‘Funke’ and the song popped. I had Davido and Mayorkun on the song. After dropping ‘Funke’ and my career still went down, I’m like, ‘Oh! Am I ever gonna rise again?’ Spyro said.
“I popped but I just came down because there was no structure. There was nothing. I took a loan from the bank to finance that particular record while I was still signed to Upfront & Personal. When that period passed, I now had to start paying for the loan. That was difficult because I paid for like three years.”
