Matteo Berrettini to defend Stuttgart title in 2023
Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini has signed up to play in Stuttgart, according to Michal Samulski. Berrettini, 26, will be making his third appearance on the grass courts of Stuttgart in 2023.
Berrettini made his Stuttgart debut in 2019, when he won the title after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final.
The Stuttgart tournament didn’t take place in 2020 because of the pandemic, while Berrettini didn’t play at the tournament in 2021. This year, Berrettini returned to Stuttgart in an impressive fashion. Berrettini, who underwent a right hand surgery in March, returned to action at the start of the grass season in Stuttgart.
In what was his first tournament in three months, Berrettini ended up winning the title as he defeated Andy Murray in the final 6-4 5-7 6-3.

En route to winning Stuttgart, Berrettini also defeated Radu Albot, Lorenzo Sonego and Oscar Otte.
After clinching three three-set wins en route to winning Stuttgart, Berrettini admitted that he entered the tournament knowing it would be tough to win the tournament. Also, Berrettini admitted that his body was hurting after completing a winning run in Stuttgart.
“It is unbelievable. It was obviously a goal [to win the title], but I thought it would be really, really tough. I don’t even think I played my best tennis, but that is why I am even more proud of myself. Mentally I was really tough.
I did an unbelievable job to be there. I fought hard and this means a lot. My body is hurting a little bit. It had been three matches without matches and today was almost three hours, so I am feeling it,” Berrettini said after winning Stuttgart.
In 2023, Berrettini will certainly be among the top favorites for the Stuttgart title. It remains to be seen if Berrettini can win his third Stuttgart title next year.
