War: Poland ready to send fighter jets to Ukraine despite Russia’s warning

The United States has said it is working with Poland on the possibility of the European country providing fighter jets to Ukraine.

Russia had warned its neighbours not to be used as routes to send lethal weapons to Ukraine, but the US said it was consulting with other allies to enable Poland to send fighter jets to Ukraine.

A White House spokesperson confirmed this to CNN as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pushes for eastern European countries to send fighter aircraft into his country.

As part of the conversations with Poland, the US is determining what “capabilities we could provide to backfill Poland if it decided to transfer planes to Ukraine,” said the spokesperson.

He explained further that sending fighter jets into Ukraine is a “sovereign decision for any country to make.”

He said, however, that a host of logistics to work would be needed, including how the aircraft would be transferred from Poland to Ukraine.

US lawmakers, who were among those in a zoom call with Zelensky earlier on Saturday quoted the Ukrainian President as saying that Poland has signaled it’s prepared to send MiG fighter jets but that “they are only waiting for you [the US] to allow it.”
