War: Japan vows to take action as Belarus backs Russia
Japan is considering hitting economic sanctions on Belarus after the country backed the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Reuters reports.
The newspaper cited two Japanese officials saying Tokyo will coordinate with other G7 governments.
The US had already hit Belarus with sanctions, which included 24 Belarusian individuals and entities.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, revealed that he had spoken with Japan’s foreign minister about “how we are standing together with Allies and partners to hold Russia accountable for its illegal, unprovoked, and unjustified attack on Ukraine”.
He further explained that Japan is helping to lead a coalition of partners and allies in response.
Japan’s Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida has already announced sanctions on Russia.
The Asian power house described the Russian invasion of Ukraine as an unacceptable violation of sovereignty and international law.
