In commemoration of United Nations (UN) day, today, UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has called for an end to conflicts jeopardising lives, while nations make progress by working to end extreme poverty, reduce inequalities and attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He said commemorating the day is a symbol of hope for global unity by giving peace a chance, safeguarding the planet, including breaking the addiction to fossil fuels, kick-starting renewable energy revolution, balancing the scales of opportunity, freedom for women, girls and ensuring human rights for all

Every October 24, UN marks the anniversary of its 1945 Charter that brought it into existence after the Second World War to replace the League of Nations.

“There is no other global organisation with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United Nations. No other world body gives hope to so many people for a better world and can deliver the future we want. Today, the urgency for all countries to come together to fulfill the promise of UN has rarely been greater.”

Meanwhile, Publicity Secretary, Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom (CANUK), Princess Moradeun Adedoyin-Solarin, said Nigeria has not benefited much as a member nation of UN, as there is very little visibility or impact in the area of security.

She, however, said the UN systems through the World Health Organisation (WHO) should be commended for its efforts in helping member nations manage the effects of COVID-19.

She further urged UN to do more in areas of world peace and stability by getting more African, Caribbean and Asian nations more involved beyond the big nations, G-7.
