Ugandan Keeper To Follow Akpeyi To Gauteng?
Indications are that Ugandan goalkeeper Isima Watenga could be set to follow in the footsteps of current Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi who earned his big move to the Soweto giants after playing for Chippa United.
In December last year, Chippa announced signing Watenga, and prior to his move to the Eastern Cape, the keeper had been training with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Back home in Uganda, it was reported late last year that the shot-stopper had been training with Downs for months.
In confirming the 25-year-old’s deal, the Chilli Boys announced that the shot-stopper had been signed on a 19-month-contract without disclosing much detail about the nature of the deal.
A source close to Chippa and the Brazilians has revealed that Downs have ‘a right’ to the Ugandan, with indications that there might be an agreement in place for him to return to Chloorkop at a later stage in his career.
“Isima Watenga is the goalkeeper from Uganda and he was with Sundowns but went to Chippa United. Sundowns have a right on the player but I wouldn’t want to comment any further about it,” said the source.
The highly-rated Watenga has previously also played in Ethiopia and Kenya in his career, but has since struggled for game-time at Chippa, as Ayanda Mtshali has been ahead of him in Dan Malesela’s team.
Meanwhile, as part of the good relationship between the two clubs, Chippa currently have Nyiko Mobbie and Luvuyo Phewa on their books on loan from Sundowns for the rest of the 2020/21 season.
