UCL: Lookman breaks personal record in Atalanta’s big win over Shakhtar Donetsk
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman nicked a goal and an assist in Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Veltins Arena.
Lookman returned to action for Atalanta in their second Champions League game against Shakhtar. Recall that they had to settle for a goalless draw against Arsenal in their first game of the competition two weeks ago.
But this time, La Dea were the favourites to beat their hosts due to their quality on paper. Atalanta proved their worth quite early as they got on the front foot and took the game to Shakhtar Donetsk.
It took them 21 minutes to take the lead, and Lookman, who has been unsung for them in the past two seasons, was the orchestrator again. He got the ball wide, went on a good run into the area, and laid it off to Berat Djimsiti, who placed a precise finish into Shakhtar Donetsk’s net to make it 1-0.
Then, just before halftime, Lookman got his goal. He got on the end of a pass from Sead Kolasinac and fired a one-time shot to make it two. The goal was Lookman’s first in the competition after just three appearances.
Just like the first half, Atalanta dominated the second half as they bossed the possession and created the better chances.
They got their third goal just three minutes into the second half as Raoul Bellanova scored a header to make it game, set and match.
Lookman was got 60 minutes of action as he was replaced by Mario Retegui. It eventually ended 3-0 in Atalanta’s favour.
