Tunji-Ojo invites Fisayo Soyombo over ‘reforms’ in Nigeria’s correctional centres
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, interior minister, has invited Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), for a “roundtable conversation” on “reforms in the Nigerian correctional service”.
On October 5, Soyombo appeared on ‘Perspectives’, an Arise TV programme, where he commented on the rot in the nation’s prisons.
In 2019, Soyombo, a former editor at TheCable, went undercover in Ikoyi Prison for eight days.
Soyombo feigned an offence for which he was arrested and detained in police custody, arraigned in court and eventually remanded at the Ikoyi Prison in Lagos.
After his release, he wrote a three-part report on his experience.
In a post on his X page on Saturday, Tunji-Ojo said “following his recent revelations on national TV, I find it necessary to invite renowned investigative journalist, Mr Fisayo Soyombo of FIJ, to a roundtable conversation”.
“I believe his expertise will be invaluable in shaping the ongoing reforms in Nigerian correctional service,” the minister added.
“I look forward to this conversation as we explore ways to create positive change that will help us navigate the complexities of our service while identifying areas for improvement.”
