Shelve your ambition, join Tinubu to move Nigeria forward, MKO Abiola’s ally urges Atiku, Obi
An ally of Bashorun MKO Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Alhaji Sufianu Kazeem, has called on former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 Presidential candidate Peter Obi, and others to collaborate with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s administration for the nation’s progress.
Kazeem urged Atiku and his peers to set aside personal ambitions and focus on meaningful contributions to national development.
In a statement addressing Atiku’s proposal for a six-year single-term presidency for Nigeria, Kazeem encouraged political parties to form alliances with Tinubu to advance the country and to refrain from hate speech that could harm it.
The elder statesman expressed support for Atiku’s recent letter to the National Assembly regarding the proposed single-term arrangement and rotational presidency, stating that it is not too late for the former Vice President to advocate for this initiative.
He emphasized that the National Assembly should consider this proposal, which he believes should extend beyond the presidency to include state governors and national and state assemblies.
It is important to note that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has suggested a six-year single-term rotational presidency between Nigeria’s northern and southern regions.
In a letter to Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Atiku sought that his proposal be considered in the ongoing constitutional amendment process by the National Assembly.
The letter dated August 29, 2024, but which became public this week was signed by Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The former Vice President sought that paragraph ‘a’ be added to Section 130 (1) of the 1999 Constitution to read thus: “The office of the President shall rotate among the six geopolitical zones of the Federation on a single term of six years flowing between the North and South on the single term of six years respectively.”
He also sought that Section 135 (2) be amended to read: “Subject to the provisions of subsection 1, the President shall vacate his office at the expiration of a period of six years commencing from the date when he has been elected to such office.
