‘Serena Williams brought tennis into the living rooms of…’, says expert
Former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki told Serena Williams that she is proud of her and what she has been able to achieve during her impressive career. On Tuesday, Williams announced in an article published for Vogue that she intends to play her last tournament at the US Open.
Wozniacki, who retired from professional tennis after the 2020 Australian Open, has always had a very good relationship with Williams. On Instagram, Williams shared several photos from her Vogue photo shoot. “I love you and I’m so proud of you,” Wozniacki wrote in the comments section of Williams’ Instagram post.
In June, Wozniacki announced that she had welcomed her second child with her husband David Lee. Williams reacted to the news by sharing Wozniacki’s Instagram post and captioning it: “I love you” Wozniacki retired two years ago and now the time has come for Williams to play the final tournament of her career.
When it came time for Williams to admit to herself that it was time to walk away from her, she had a hard time saying those words out loud. “I’ve been reluctant to admit to myself or anyone else that I have to stop playing tennis,” Williams told Vogue.
“Alexis [Ohanian], my husband, and I have barely talked about it; it’s like a taboo subject. I can’t even have this conversation with my mom and dad. It’s like it’s not real until you say it out loud. The subject comes up, an uncomfortable lump forms in my throat, and I start to cry.
The only person I’ve really gotten to that with is my therapist. One thing I’m not going to do is sugarcoat this. I know a lot of people are excited and looking forward to retirement, and I would really like to feel that way.”
Wilander talks about Serena Williams
We were obviously looking forward to the tribute that Mats Wilander was going to pay to Serena Williams. We were not disappointed. The Swede sums up in a few words the impact that the American has had on the tennis world.
“She pushed the boundaries of the sport and brought tennis into the living rooms of people who wouldn’t normally watch the sport. Serena Williams’ departure from professional tennis will be a sad day, as she has given so much to tennis.
Serena showed that she was one of the greatest athletes of all time, but she also showed that she was human, and that is where our passion and admiration for Serena Williams begins.”
