Plateau killings

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has expressed outrage over the recent killings of innocent citizens at Angwan Rukuba in Jos, Plateau State, describing the incident as a grim reminder of the fragility of human life in the country.

In a statement issued by its Secretary General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, the Council said the attack underscored the urgent need for decisive and responsible action by authorities to halt the cycle of violence across Nigeria.

The Council lamented that repeated condemnations by government officials after such attacks have become predictable and insufficient, stressing that mere statements without concrete action can no longer be tolerated.

According to the SCSN, the primary responsibility of government at all levels remains the protection of lives and property, urging leaders and security agencies to move beyond rhetoric and demonstrate the political will needed to end the killings.

It noted that the sanctity of human life is central in Islam, adding that the unlawful taking of life, irrespective of religious or ethnic identity, is a grave offence against both God and humanity.

The council further stated that the pattern of the Angwan Rukuba attack suggested a premeditated and coordinated operation aimed at triggering wider religious and communal conflict in Plateau State.

It raised concerns over the possible involvement of well-funded groups, including foreign elements, allegedly linked to the proliferation of small arms, cross-border movement of fighters, and the financing of violent networks within Nigeria.

The SCSN warned that such actors often exploit existing socio-religious fault lines to destabilise communities, weaken national cohesion and sustain cycles of violence for ulterior interests.

It also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in parts of Northern Nigeria, particularly the North-East and North-West, where communities continue to face insurgency, banditry and mass killings.

The Council paid tribute to security personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty, noting that their sacrifices should spur a more effective national security response.

It extended condolences to the government and people of Plateau State, as well as families of victims, while urging religious leaders across faiths to promote peace, restraint and mutual understanding among their followers.

The SCSN called for a thorough investigation into the incident and urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and united, stressing that the time had come for decisive action to halt the country’s slide into recurring violence.
