‘Painful to watch’, Fans left unimpressed despite Super Eagles qualification for 2023 AFCON
June 19, 2023
Fans of the Super Eagles of Nigeria were left unimpressed following their last-gasp 3-2 win over Sierra Leone on Sunday which sealed their qualification for the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Needing at least a draw to qualify, the Super Eagles raced to a 2-0 lead courtesy of a brace from reigning Capocannonier Victor Osimhen in the first half. Mustapha Bundu pulled one back for the Leone Stars in the 41st minute.
The Super Eagles could have extended their lead but squandered their chances and were pegged back to 2-2 in the 84th minute thanks to an Augustus Kargo strike.
The match seemed destined for a draw, until Zaidu Sanusi made a run into the Sierra Leonian box, releasing a cross that beat both defender and goalkeeper, for Kelechi Iheanacho to tap in.
The win ensured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2023 AFCON hosted by Cote d’Ivoire, but despite the achievement, fans were left unimpressed by the performance of the Super Eagles, calling for improvement ahead of the tournament in January.
Here are some reactions gathered by The Quest Times
@onemotolani This should be a golden era/generation for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, but due to a succession of shitty managerial hires, the Super Eagles keep looking like a bunch of amateurs, who keep getting beat and tied by teams they should be far superior to. Painful to watch, really.
@_AsiwajuLerry He might have conceded 2 goals, but this Super Eagles new goalkeeper was fantastic today
@Buchi_Laba If not that it’s my job to cover Nigeria football and Victor Osimhen. On God, I don’t care about the Super eagles of Nigeria.
Too many players are comfortable in their Super Eagles slots/starting 11. That is a very bad thing.

@PoojaMedia Super Eagles must improve ahead of AFCON 2023. This performance can’t win us the title.
On a weekend where Senegal dropped points and Morocco lost, it’s good to see Nigeria’s Super Eagles leading Sierra Leone 2-1 at half time.
We need more Victor Osimhen magic in the second half. #SLENGA

@knormzzy Omo super eagles don score o courtesy Iheanacho. This kind lost time goal dey pain person eh. The match too sour like lime orange.
@soccerani I am still skeptical about our coach’s prowess. I expected Super Eagles to be very, very spectacular. Performance today on a neutral ground is completely unacceptable.
@OnyedumFrancis Super Eagles plays better when I don’t watch the game, maybe I’m the problem
