Nigeria’s Fred Agbedi Amplifies Africa’s Democratic Voice at Global Free Speech Summit in Brussels

Nigeria’s democratic voice resonated on the global stage this week as Rt. Hon. (Chief) Fred Agbedi, Ph.D., participated in a high-level international summit on Freedom of Opinion and Expression held in Brussels, Belgium.

The summit, which convened on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, brought together a select group of lawmakers and political leaders from Europe, Africa, and the Americas to examine the future of free expression in democratic societies facing rapid political and technological change.

Agbedi, who represents Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, currently serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Special Duties and Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus in the lower chamber.

Discussions at the summit focused on freedom of expression as a cornerstone of democratic governance, drawing directly from Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to hold opinions and share information without interference.

Participants engaged in wide-ranging debates on the responsibilities of public institutions, parliaments, academic communities, cultural bodies, and international organizations in safeguarding free speech, particularly in the context of emerging digital regulations.

Special attention was given to evolving global frameworks such as the European Union’s Digital Services Act and their implications for online speech, democratic accountability, and the balance between regulation and individual liberties.

Agbedi’s presence underscored Nigeria’s growing influence in global policy conversations and highlighted his reputation as a legislator known for intellectual rigor, principled leadership, and a consistent defense of democratic values.

Observers at the summit noted that his engagement reflected a broader African perspective on governance, transparency, and human dignity at a time when freedom of expression faces renewed pressures worldwide.

The event was convened by the Political Network for Values, a global coalition of political leaders committed to advancing public policies rooted in human dignity, fundamental freedoms, and strong societal values—principles that align closely with Agbedi’s legislative and public service record.

The summit concluded with a symbolic group photograph of African delegates from Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Uganda, and other participating countries, capturing a shared continental commitment to defending and promoting freedom of expression in democratic societies.
