Nigerian Government Secures Agreement For Mini-Grid Simulation And Standardization Centre In Partnership With China
The Nigerian government has secured an agreement to establish a world-class mini-grid simulation and technical standardization centre, marking a major achievement during the President’s visit to China.
This milestone, finalized during the official trip, is seen as a key development in advancing Nigeria’s renewable energy sector, ensuring the standardization of all Rural Electrification Agency (REA) projects nationwide.
Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized the importance of standardizing REA projects, noting that it is essential for supporting Nigeria’s goals of localizing the energy value chain.
“This centre will not only enhance the efficient deployment of REA projects but also protect our renewable energy investments by improving the quality and standards of equipment used across the country,” the minister said.
On September 5, 2024, REA Managing Director/CEO, Abba Aliyu, signed an agreement with Zhilin Ni, Director of Huawei Nigeria, at Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzen, China, for the establishment of the centre.
The facility will feature state-of-the-art laboratories capable of simulating diverse environmental conditions, including extreme weather, to test the durability and efficiency of renewable energy systems. This initiative will strengthen Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s renewable energy sector and support the export of locally produced technologies. It will also serve as a hub for research and development, fostering innovation in renewable energy solutions.
Additionally, the centre is a vital part of Nigeria’s industrialization strategy, reducing dependency on imports, boosting domestic capacity, and enhancing the country’s competitiveness in the global renewable energy market. It will also play a crucial role in realizing Nigeria’s ambition for value chain localization.
The agreement is a key outcome of the President’s visit to China, reflecting the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing Nigeria’s energy transition and economic growth. The minister reiterated the President’s vision, highlighting the alignment of this collaboration with the country’s broader goals of industrialization, energy security, and climate resilience.
