The monarchy may be looking to the future as King Charles III begins his reign on the throne, but Netflix is preparing to send us back to the past with the upcoming release of The Crown season five.

The streaming platform confirmed the newest season of the massively popular show will premiere on November 9.

The next instalment will focus on the 1990s, a time of significant controversy for the royal family amid the then Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s high-profile divorce.

Announced during Netflix’s Tudum global fan event on the weekend, which teased upcoming series and films from the streamer, all 10 episodes of The Crown will drop simultaneously, and fans will be treated to a whole new cast as the royal family enters a new decade.

Season five will star Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Dominic West replaces Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, and actress Elizabeth Debicki takes over from Emma Corrin as Diana.

Also joining the cast is Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and Lesley Manville portraying Princess Margaret.

The announcement of The Crown season five was accompanied by a teaser trailer that foreshadows the bitter split between Prince Charles and Princess Diana, as well as hinting at the involvement of Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams).

According to Deadline, the season five finale will focus on the August 31, 1997, car crash in Paris that led to Princess Diana’s death. News of the upcoming season comes off the back of renewed interest in the series following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, with The Crown re-entering Netflix’s top 10 shows this month.

Season six is currently in production in London, but filming was paused following the Queen’s death on September 8.

That season will be the show’s last and will feature the introduction of Prince William and Prince Harry and the future Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton.

A release date for season six has yet to be confirmed though The Crown traditionally premieres in November, so the end of next year seems logical.

However, it remains to be seen if the delay in production will push the season back to 2024.
