Morocco coach hails ‘great team effort’ after historic Women’s World Cup progression
Reynald Pedros, the mastermind behind Morocco’s team, is elated with their second successive victory and their remarkable qualification for the second round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
The Frenchman praised his players for their “great team effort” after they secured a historic place in the World Cup knockout stages on Thursday.
The Atlas Lionesses beat Colombia 1-0 courtesy of Anissa Lahmari’s first-half stoppage time goal, before Germany and Korea Republic’s 1-1 draw confirmed Morocco’s progression from Group H as one of the best third-placed teams.
In a turn of events that can only be described as miraculous, Pedros led his team to redemption after a devastating six-goal defeat in their inaugural Women’s World Cup match.
With determination and steady progress, the Atlas Lionesses defied all odds, securing their place in the second round, a feat that seemed improbable to many.
“Our qualification is a reward for the great work we are doing,” said Pedros.
“We have great players, and today, we played as a very big team.”
“This is our journey to an extra round. We love them [the fans] so much and have great feelings for them. We feel their great support, and our strength comes from them.”
Pedros had previously tasted glory twice as the coach of Lyon, clinching the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2017 and 2019.
He then set his sights on a new challenge, embarking on a journey to North Africa to mentor the Moroccan national team. His arrival sparked a grand vision that is now surpassing all expectations.
At 51 years old, Pedros masterfully guided Morocco to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 after an immensely successful campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations last year.
His team displayed exceptional talent, making it to the finals by defeating Nigeria on their path to glory.
Now, Pedros is overwhelmed with joy, having achieved the nearly impossible task of steering Morocco towards the Women’s World Cup Final.
The thrilling 1-0 victory against Colombia, combined with Germany’s unexpected stumble against South Korea, propelled Morocco to the next stage.
The coach expressed his deep admiration and gratitude for the team, acknowledging their immense support and inspiration.
He added, “We love them so much and have great feelings for them. We feel their great support, and our strength comes from them. What we did today was also thanks to them. Congratulations to all the players for their achievement, and we will continue on the same path.”
The Moroccan national team’s extraordinary journey continues, with their next challenge set against France next Tuesday in Adelaide.
