Memphis business prepares to release Tyre Nicole’s bodycam video

 

Memphis, Tenn. — Memphis businesses have their windows boarded up ahead of the release of bodycam footage of a police encounter with Ty Nichols that resulted in his death.

According to Memphis police, Nichols was pulled over on January 7th for suspected reckless driving. After a confrontation between Nichols and the police officers, the 29-year-old black man fled on foot. Another confrontation occurred before Nichols was arrested.

Nichols was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, he died three days later as the result of an “incident involving the use of force with officers”.

Bodycam footage of the incident is expected to be released after 7 p.m. EST on Friday.

The five police officers involved were charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault and additional felonies.

Experts say release of Tire Nicholls video on Friday evening could lead to violent weekend protests

Memphis Police Chief Cerelin Davis reviewed bodycam footage and called Nichols’ death a “failure of basic humanity” during Wednesday’s press conference. He also urged the city against responding with violence.

Meanwhile, the Nichols family, calling for devastation and justice, urged protesters to protest peacefully during Friday’s press conference.

“We want peace,” said Rodney Wells, Nicholls’ stepfather. “That’s what the family wants. That’s what the community wants.”
