Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard to be offered Man Utd lifeline by Erik ten Hag

Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard to be offered Man Utd lifeline by Erik ten Hag

Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard’s uncertain futures at Manchester United have recently made headlines, with new boss Erik ten Hag running the rule over the squad ahead of the summer transfer window

Erik ten Hag will reportedly offer Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard the chance to resurrect their Manchester United careers when he steps into the Old Trafford hot seat.

The incoming Red Devils boss, who has insisted that his immediate focus is to finish on a high as Ajax manager, appears to have already ran the rule over United’s underperforming squad, with very few players safe as part of his new era.

Two stars who have failed to shine on enough occasions this season have been Rashford and Lingard, casting their futures into doubt.

Recently, it was revealed that Rashford was considering his future at the club, while fellow academy graduate and boyhood fan, Lingard, is out of contract in two months’ time and looks set to depart on a free transfer. However, it has been claimed by the Sun that Ten Hag will soon sit down with the pair and discuss their futures.

Mirror Football exclusively reported last month that the Dutch tactician has scheduled one-to-one meetings over Zoom with every member of the squad ahead his hotly-anticipated arrival.

Rashford is believed to be ‘confident’ about turning his fortunes around under Ten Hag and ‘can’t wait’ for a fresh start, having lost his place in Gareth Southgate ‘s England squad. “Both camps have spoken and Marcus is aware of what the new manager wants and expects,” a source told The Sun.

“This season has been difficult but he’s never wanted to leave Old Trafford. He’s optimistic about his chances under Ten Hag and knows that if he plays well for United, he will be in the thoughts of Gareth Southgate.”

Lingard, on the other hand, will seek assurances from the 54-year-old and then decide whether or not to sign a new deal at Old Trafford. According to the report, Ten Hag has made it clear that he wants to have a conversation with the midfielder, who is a target for West Ham and Newcastle, the latter of which he was close to joining in January.

The Red Devils blocked a move to St James’ Park, yet interim manager Ralf Rangnick has largely preferred to keep Lingard away from the starting XI, despite United’s struggles. Club legend Paul Scholes reckons that Ten Hag could persuade him to stay, though, telling talkSPORT after leaking Lingard’s comments on the ‘disastrous’ Old Trafford dressing room : “I think Jesse has been treated pretty poorly by the club, to be honest.

“He was ready to sign for Newcastle at one point and West Ham, right at the end of deadline day and he was told he was going to get more minutes. That clearly hasn’t happened. He’s deserved a chance. We all saw what he did at West Ham.

“He’s a really good footballer and can bring goals to a team and with this team playing so poorly as well, for him not to get a chance… I think he’s unfairly treated. I think he might suit [Ten Hag] and he might want to keep him.

“We will see what happens. It’s obvious he never wants to leave Manchester United, and if this manager wants him then why wouldn’t he stay?” Meanwhile, Rashford has found opportunities more limited than under previous boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having scored just four Premier League goals this term.

In March, Rangnick publicly told the forward that he was free to leave the club in search of more regular football. “I don’t think this is an issue and he never said anything about [being unhappy],” the 63-year-old stated. “But the [transfer] window is closed now.
