Marcelo Bielsa reacts to milestone moment for Leeds United man in Chelsea clash
Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa says Joe Gelhardt showed his quality during his side’s 3-2 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday.
That’s after the striker netted his first Premier League goal in that game, a moment that Bielsa was certainly impressed with.
Having been prolific at youth level ever since joining Leeds from Wigan last summer, Gelhardt has started to work his way into the first-team picture at Elland Road last season.
The 19-year-old took another step forward in his progress on Saturday, getting on the scoresheet in a Premier League game for the first time in his career.
Having been brought on with eight minutes of normal time remaining, Gelhardt’s first touch saw him turn home Tyler Roberts’ cross to make it 2-2, with a moment the teenager is unlikely to ever forget.
Although Jorginho’s stoppage time penalty, his second of the game, earned a 3-2 win for Chelsea to break Leeds hearts, Bielsa still seemed delighted for Gelhardt to get his goal.
Speaking about the teenager’s breakthrough strike in his post match press conference, Bielsa was quoted by Leeds Live as saying: “It was a goal that reflects his qualities and his form. He was in the right place at the right moment.
“I think those characteristics at this level is important, especially as it was a goal that allowed us to level the game, not a [consolation]. 2-2 away from home against Chelsea.“
What a moment this was for Gelhardt.
Many players will surely dream of scoring a goal in the Premier League, and that is something the Leeds striker can now say he has done at just 19 years of age.
The fact that it came at such an early stage of his career, and at such a significant moment of this game, should also have him brimming with confidence moving forwards as well.
Indeed, the fact that he has shown he can step up and get on the scoresheet in the Premier League could be a big relief for Leeds too, given their lack of alternative cover for the injury hit Patrick Bamford.
