Liverpool’s Champions League final against Real Madrid was delayed by 30 minutes from 8pm on Saturday evening due to carnage involving fans outside the Stade de France in Paris.

The European juggernauts were set to go head-to-head on the eighth hour as Jurgen Klopp’s men went up against Carlo Ancelotti’s Spanish champions, but organisers took an unwanted measure to groans from spectators.

It was announced inside the stadium that kick-off would be pushed back to 8:15pm and later 8:30pm BST due to the ‘late arrival of fans’ amid reports of carnage in getting supporters with tickets inside the stadium – Gary Lineker among them.

Lineker tweeted before the clash: “Finding it impossible to get in the ground. This appears to be very dangerous. Absolute carnage.”

With presenter, and daughter of Kenny Dalglish, Kelly Cates saying: “Absolutely shambolic at the Stade de France.

“No way in, no way of knowing which way to go. Stay safe if you’re heading in. It has the potential to be very dangerous.”

Fans of both teams had been queuing in their numbers to get into the ground even after the original scheduled kick-off time, with some Liverpool fans hit by tear gas.

BT Sport reported that fans had entered the stadium with tears streaming from their eyes having experienced a horrible situation outside.

To make matters worse, many fans outside the ground had been given no information about the delayed kick-off, with confusion threatening to ruin the occasion.

BBC Journalist Nick Parrott said: “I have just been pepper sprayed for the first time in my life. I have been to the Champions League final before and I have never been pepper sprayed before.

“I was outside Gate Y which has been opening and closing repeatedly over the last hour and a half but nobody has been going through.

“The security staff on the other side advanced and sprayed pepper spray.”
