Princess Kate’s ‘s secret outings with Camilla have helped ease tense relations between her husband Prince William and father-in-law, King Charles, an expert has claimed. Royal author Angela Levin believes the Princess of Wales has become the Royal Family ‘s peacekeeper, and claims the mum-of-three makes the effort to spend time with both the King and Queen Consort.

In her new book Camilla: From Outcast to Future Queen Consort, which has been serialised in The Telegraph ahead of its release later this month, Levin claims that Kate’s shared love of art and the theatre sees her spend time with Charles and Camilla away from her husband.

The mix of public and private outings have seen the trio become extremely close, which has helped William’s relationship with his dad and stepmum, which was strained after Charles married Camilla.

Levin writes: “Fortunately, time helped improve Camilla’s relationship with senior Royals, including Prince William, largely thanks to the Princess of Wales, who is a peacemaker.

“Camilla is also a conciliator and doesn’t nurse grievances. They both believe that supporting their husbands is a priority.

“Catherine has a love of the arts, which William doesn’t particularly share, and she often goes both privately and publicly with the Queen Consort and King Charles to see exhibitions.”

Angela said that King Charles, then a prince, used to make sure she was never at Highgrove House when the princes visited, but had suggested she meet Prince William and Prince Harry before Princess Diana’s death in 1997.

Later, he suggested Camilla meet his two sons with her two children, Tom and Laura, at Birkhall.

When King Charles turned 50, Prince William and Prince Harry threw him a surprise party and knew he would want Camilla to be there, so William organised an opportunity to meet his father’s partner before the party so they could get to know each other.

They arranged a meeting on June 12, 1998, and William turned up early to meet Camilla. It is reported that they spoke for half an hour and appeared to get on well.

After the meeting, Camilla supposedly announced: “I need a gin and tonic!”
