JURGEN KLOPP CONFIRMS JOEL MATIP SUFFERED ANKLE LIGAMENT DAMAGE IN TOTTENHAM WIN
Here is your Liverpool digest for Friday, January 29.
Major Matip blow
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Joel Matip picked up an ankle ligament injury in Liverpool’s win over Spurs.
The centre-back – the Reds’ only fit experienced central defender – was replaced by Nat Phillips at half-time in the victory.
Klopp has now confirmed that the 29-year-old, who has endured a torrid time through injury in recent seasons, has suffered a potentially serious issue.
He told BT Sport: “We scored goals in the right moments, wonderful goals, the right people scored the goals, so it was all good apart from Joel Matip.
“It looks like something serious with Joel to be honest.”
Fabinho injury explained
Fabinho missed Liverpool’s victory over Spurs due to a minor muscle injury.
Doubts were raised by fans pre-match after he was pictured sitting out of a training session for the Reds ahead of the contest.
Their fears were confirmed when Fabinho was absent from the squad to face Spurs, with Matip and Jordan Henderson playing in defence.
Speaking pre-match, Klopp said it was an injury that could not be helped.
He said: “Actually it was nothing really. He just felt something so we had to take him out. Now he’s out.
“It wasn’t in a challenge or in an intense situation or anything. It’s just how things happen. It is how it is.”

Henderson impresses
Whilst Matip will definitely miss Sunday’s game against West Ham and there are major doubts over Fabinho, the Reds were handed a boost with how well Jordan Henderson performed at centre-back against Spurs.
The captain was given an 8/10 in the ECHO’s player ratings thanks to his steadying influence at the back.
Having also showcased his passing ability with the ball that initiated Roberto Firmino’s opener, it is likely that the 30-year-old will continue in the role on Sunday.
