January to March: NDLEA convicts 37 drug peddlers in Kano

About 37 drug peddlers and users have been convicted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Kano State Command, between January and March.

Mr Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, the State Commander of the Agency, explained on Monday that the command arrested 352 suspects within the period.

He explained that the command had filed 39 fresh cases, while 127 other cases were pending, besides the 37 convicted by the Federal High Court.

He said, “between January to March, 955.304kg of cannabis sativa, 1,225.05kg of Codeine and Tramadol, 25 grams of cocaine, 17 grams of heroine and 52 grams of methamphetamine were confiscated.”

He further explained that the command had made good strides in their drug demand reduction efforts where 5,060 people in secondary and tertiary students, traders associations, vigilante groups and political thugs, among others, were sensitised on the menace of drug abuse.

He appealed to residents to always alert the agency with information on the activities of drug dealers in their community with a view to curbing their activities.

He assured that this could be achieved when the general public and parents, as well as community leaders, become watchdogs of their wards to tackle the menace of drug trafficking and abuse.

He assured that the agency would not relent in its efforts in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking in the state and other parts of the country.

He stated that the command would continue to move around in every nook and cranny of the state to ensure a drug-free society is achieved.
