Post Graduate studies should go beyond mere research, degrees but solve societal problems – Prof. Owunari Georgewill

Professor Owunari Georgewill, Vice Chancellor University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State has challenged the graduates of Post Graduate studies and Institutions of Higher Learning to evolve from mere research aimed at the acquisition of degrees into cultivation of ideas and insights to solve societal problems.
Prof. Georgewill made this known on Tuesday at the school of Post Graduate Studies at the Bayelsa State owned Niger Delta University (NDU) Ammassoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government area.
Professor Owunari Georgewill, who was the Keynote speaker at the Maiden edition of Niger Delta University, Postgraduate school Conference, with the theme “Postgraduate studies: The Nexus between industry and society”, pointed out that the Postgraduate studies remain the backbone of every progressive society, stressing the need for synergy and collaboration between the university and industry to turn ideas into solutions.
The conference, which also witnessed the huge attendance of Academia, Industry leaders, entrepreneurs and researchers focused on awakening the minds of scholars on how Postgraduate studies, metabolise the professional world’s demands.
The event also highlighted the urgent need for stronger collaboration across sectors.
Earlier In his opening remarks, Dean Postgraduate school, Niger Delta University, Professor Mirabeau Tatfeng emphasized the need for the post Graduate schools to diagnose how academic realization can efficiently meet industry expectations.
Also speaking, Dr. Mrs Kate Ikechi Isa, CEO Katchey Laboratories, revealed that the future of food security in Africa hinges on the strength of collective science, innovation and unwavering mutually beneficial collaboration.
She encouraged students to carry out NEEDS Assessment to identify areas that require research in other to solve pressing problems.
Also present at the conference were Professor Allen Agih, Vice Chancellor Niger Delta University, Mr Matthew Seiyefa, Pro-Chancellor, Professor Mrs. Iheoma Adekunle, Dean Postgraduate school, Federal University Otuoke, Professor Kinikanwo, Dean Postgraduate school, University of Porth Harcourt, Heads of Departments, lectures, amongst others.
