This is horrible. Why kill the kids and not their mother?

How does a man “recover” his past efforts in these type scenarios – without resorting to doing something drastic? That’s an answer I’ve yet to hear anybody address clearly.
Let’s be honest, that’s one of the biggest motives inciting these responses.
