An 80-year-old Ukrainian man was apparently photographed trying to enlist in the army to fight “for his grandkids”. A photo of the man was shared by former Ukrainian First Lady Kateryna Yushchenko on Twitter on Thursday.
In the photo, an elderly man in a black cap is seen approaching a Ukrainian soldier with a leather bag.
“Someone posted a photo of this 80-year-old who showed up to join the army, carrying with him a small case with 2 t-shirts, a pair of extra pants, a toothbrush and a few sandwiches for lunch. He said he was doing it for his grandkids,” Yushchenko wrote while tweeting the photo.

It’s unclear where the photograph was taken, but it went viral Friday as Russiaadvanced its attack on Ukraine.
Yushchenko’s tweet has gone viral, garnering more than 2.5 lakh likes and over 39,000 retweets. Netizens applauded the elderly man’s bravery.
One user said, “I can’t articulate how broken this makes me feel, praying for Ukraine.” Another wrote, “For love of family and country.”
A third user added, “The heart & will of the Ukrainian people is strong.” Yet another commented, “Bless and protect this man!”
Ukraine announced late Thursday that men between the ages of 18 and 60 were forbidden from leaving the nation, which has been under martial law since the start of the Russian invasion.
Earlier, a video of a Ukrainian father bidding a teary farewell to his daughter as she allegedly fled the country to safety while he was seemingly forced to stay back had surfaced online. He hugged and kissed her before seeing her off.
