Governors Mbah, Fubara, Abiodun Condemn ‘Deplorable’ State of Police Training School in Rivers

Three Nigerian governors have voiced strong concern over the poor condition of the Nigeria Police Force Training School in Nonwa, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State, describing it as “deplorable” and “unfit” for training law enforcement officers.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun made the remarks on Thursday during an inspection visit as part of the National Economic Council (NEC) Committee on the Overhaul of Security Training Institutions.

The committee—chaired by Governor Mbah—was recently inaugurated to produce, within one month, a national blueprint for the renovation and modernisation of police and security training facilities across the country.

At the Nonwa Training School, the governors were met with visibly run-down infrastructure, including collapsed roofs, broken windows and overgrown vegetation.

Governor Mbah said the level of neglect was unacceptable, warning that such conditions hinder efforts to build a professional and capable police force.

“We cannot expect quality personnel to emerge from decayed and dilapidated training environments,” Mbah said. “The President has prioritised security, and our task is to develop a comprehensive plan to restore and modernise these institutions.”

Governor Abiodun described the visit as evidence of the Federal Government’s determination to reform the nation’s security sector, noting that the President’s directive reflects a strong political will to strengthen law enforcement capacity nationwide.

“This visit demonstrates the President’s commitment to supporting law enforcement,” Abiodun said. “We are determined to meet the one-month deadline and ensure these institutions are fully refurbished and equipped.”

Rivers State Governor Fubara said the initiative was critical to improving police professionalism and enhancing public safety.

“We are committed to supporting this process to ensure our officers receive world-class training and deliver quality service to citizens,” he said.

The governors are expected to submit their recommendations to the National Economic Council next month, outlining measures for rebuilding and re-equipping police and other security training institutions nationwide.
