Ex-NIMASA DG seeks presidential pardon for Saro-Wiwa, others

The immediate past Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administrative and Safety Agency, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has called on the Federal Government to grant presidential pardon to late Ogoni hero, Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight of his kinsmen.

Peterside, in a statement by his media team obtained by our correspondent in Port Harcourt, said such pardon would heal the wounds of the Ogoni people and enable the nine to be buried properly and given due recognition for their ultimate sacrifice.

“President Muhammadu Buhari must be commended for expediting action on the United Nation’s Environment Programme report. We can only plead that Saro-Wiwa and other patriots that were killed alongside him be granted a presidential pardon and allow them to be honoured by their kinsmen and Nigerians at large.

“This will go a long way in healing wounds and fast-track the process of sense of belonging and fervent belief in the hopes and aspirations of the country,” Peterside who spoke at the 25th anniversary of Ogoni Martyrs Day said on Tuesday.
