Ethiopia set to plant over 7.5b seedlings during coming rainy season

The Ethiopian government has set to plant over 7.5 billion seedlings during the coming rainy season as part of its Green Legacy Initiative, with a vision of building a green and climate resilient country.

Last month the government said it has successfully surpassed its ambitious goal of planting more than 40 billion seedlings under the Green Legacy Initiative since June 2019.

Green Legacy Initiative Technical Committee Chairman Adefris Worku told reporters Friday that during this year’s planting season starting from June to September; the seedlings are intended to be planted in areas where soil and water conservation activities have been carried out as well as in areas with degraded landscapes.

He said that this endeavor is not merely a task but a substantial investment in the nation’s ecological future, showcasing Ethiopia’s dedication to proactive climate action.

Amid growing global climate concerns, Worku said Ethiopia’s efforts could serve as an inspiration for similar initiatives worldwide.

“By covering our land with green plants, we not only fight climate change but also create a more visually appealing environment,” he said.

The Green Legacy Initiative aims to combat deforestation, restore degraded landscapes, and enhance environmental resilience.

The Ethiopian Forestry Development recently revealed plans to plant 7.5 billion seedlings during the upcoming rainy season from June to September.
