Emirates told to cough up more than $2.2 million after losing bags full of cash
A court in Nigeria has ordered Emirates to pay out $1.63 million (NZ$2.2 million) to a businessman after it lost two bags full of cash in 2007.
Orji Prince Ikem was flying to China from Lagos and had the huge amount of cash to buy goods. He says he was persuaded by Emirates staff to hand over the bags for safekeeping. The luggage was never seen again.
The $1.63 million was a combination of his own money and another businessman, Olisaemeka Ugwunze.
Over the last 12 years, Ikem has repeatedly made efforts to find the missing bags and the money but to no avail.
Now, the Federal High Court in Lagos has told the airline it must pay back the $1.63 million, plus damages of 50 million Nigerian Naira (NZ$182,384), reports The Nation.
Emirates said it was not responsible for baggage handling at Murtala Muhammad International Airport, saying that was the job of Nigerian Aviation Handling Company. The airline is planning to appeal the ruling.
