The Trade Union Congress TUC Bayelsa State council has conferred awards to prominent Bayelsans who have distinguished themselves in different areas of specialization in the State.

 

The 2nd edition of the Annual Lecture/Awards Night witnessed 20 awardees with the theme “The role of Civil Servants Towards the Advancement of the Democratic Process of Nigeria, the 2023 Guber Election in Perspective”

In a remark chairman of the occasion and commissioner for Labour Employment and Productive Dr Stanley Braboke, said civil servants play crucial roles in deciding who becomes the governor of the State, urging civil servants to continue to contribute their quota in the electioneering process.

 

Dr Braboke noted that the way to get involved in the process is to register and get their permanent Voter cards PVC’s ahead of the November 11 poll in the State, adding that the current leadership of the TUC has given hope to civil servants in the State.

 

Also, Secretary to the Bayelsa State government Alabo Gideon Ekeuwei, represented by his Executive Assistant Dr Sokari Stanley, expressed the need for civil servants to strategically position themselves to ensure that government policies and programs are achieved to get good governance.

 

He commended TUC for the initiative to create awareness for workers who over the years have always sit back during elections.

 

Earlier in an address of welcome State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress TUC, comrade Laye Julius, said the vision of the body has a way in changing the dynamics of the relationship between government and TUC, stressing that TUC have fashioned out deliberate policies and procedures to engage government in the struggle of improved welfare.

 

He noted that Bayelsa is one of the leading States in the federation to earn the thirty thousand naira minimum wage in full using the template released by the National Salaries, Income and wages commission, saying that payment of 2015 to 2017 arrears has commenced in the State.

The TUC boss explained that Bayelsa is one of the few States in the country that has consistently conducted promotion interviews and subsequent implementation of the promotion for successful civil servants, awakening the consciousness of members to exercise their franchise during elections.

 

In a Lecture by Prof Ambily Etekpe, a Senior Lecturer at the Niger Delta University, NDU, he emphasized the crucial roles of civil servants in the advancement of democracy, highlighting their potential to exert a positive influence on politics with an estimated count of 12.7-8 million civil servants, representing 7.1-0% of the country’s population.

 

Prof Etekpe stressed that the TUC should advocate for its members to vote for candidates with proven track records in translating ideas into worker-friendly policies.

The award recipients include, Alabo Gideon Ekeuwei, Hon. Gentle Emelah, Prof. Dennis Alagoa, Pastor Robin Apreala, Hon. Tonye Emmanuel Isenah, Mr. Ebiki Timitimi, Mr.Ovieteme George and Comrade Robinson Erebi.

 

Others are Hon.Ted Elemeforo, Pastor Peter Akpe, Chief Millionaire Asangba, Engr. Simbi Kesiye Wabote, Hon. Moses Teibowei, Hon Perekiye Buruboyefa, Mrs Doris Opuwari and Chief Collins Cocodia.
