DELTA: We are dying, Abraka residents advocate, gives 3days ultimatum over deplorable roads
It was a drama in Abraka, a town in Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria, as aggrieved residents declared Abraka Needs Roads advocacy group on Sunday, 27 of August.
PEBNEWS reports that the advocacy group in the Delta State University community also embedded 3days ultimatum, threatening to block all accessible roads if relevant authorities still pay no attention to the deplorable spots.
Mr. Prince Godstime Ukuanovwe, civil rights activist and a convener of the group, Abraka Needs Roads aggressively lamented that;
“We hereby demand that an immediate fixing of link roads in Abraka, the immediate fixing of the federal Highway that leads to Abraka. As citizens, we can no longer keep quiet. We are here to say that enough is enough.
“To the relevant authorities, we’re giving 3days ultimatum to mobilise, sight, and to fix all dilapidated roads in Abraka. To give our people a workable drainage, to give our people a workable access roads. We can not continue to keep quiet.
“Failure to do this in 3 days’ time, we are going to occupy the streets, and we are going to block all accessed roads,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Dr. Morrison Jessa, leader of the advocacy group, alleged that bad roads had killed their loved ones, where he expressed that they are suffering.
In his words, “we are saying enough is enough. This is a conglomerate of citizens, residents, and sympathisers of the Abraka community. We’re saying enough is enough. We are all suffering, so we’re calling on all relevant authorities to come to our aid.
“Our economy is grounded. We’re using our mega resources to repay our cars and bury our deaths who died as a result of bad roads. We’re dying.” He stated.
In the part of Comr Umukoro Efemena, Uhrobo Progress Union, UPU, Youth Wing President, and a member of the advocacy group, “Abraka has been cut off from the world. We’ve been fighting this since 2018 till date, Abraka has been abandoned by both the federal and state government. We’re saying that enough is enough.
“Abraka is a community that hosts a prestigious Delta state university, and our students have over the times had accidents because of these bad roads. A lot of students had been killed because of these bad roads. If we need our students to go to school, the government should come to the aide of our people,” He also stated.
However, a mechanic who is identified as Jude Opute Stephen revealed that he towed almost 10 cars that got spoilt due to bad roads daily.
Jude disclosed this to PEBNEWS correspondent when he was battling to tow a Siennna that sinked at one of the bad spots, while the advocacy movement was still on.
