Cristiano Ronaldo misses penalty before Manchester United are dumped out of the FA Cup with defeat in shootout to Middlesbrough
Manchester United are OUT of the FA Cup with a shock defeat at home to Championship side Middlesbrough on penalties.
Having played out a 1-1 draw after extra-time, the tie went to the dreaded shootout, which Boro won 8-7. Anthony Elanga’s wild effort, which flew over the bar, proved to be the decisive moment.
Jadon Sancho’s deflected effort gave Man United an early lead but the home side were guilty of being very wasteful in front of goal.
Cristiano Ronaldo dragged a first-half penalty wide, while the Portuguese, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford later missed huge opportunities.
And despite being thoroughly outplayed in the first half, Boro found themselves level less than 20 minutes after the break when boyhood Red Devils fan Matt Crooks bundled the ball in.
The way the goal came about left the Man United players and fans incensed as the ball clearly struck assist-provider Duncan Watmore on the hand in the build-up, however, changes to the handball laws reveal the goal was correctly given.
Few could have seen the match going the distance given the way United started.
Sancho hit the crossbar inside 80 seconds of a one-sided first half in which he would fire the hosts ahead via a slight Isaiah Jones defection shortly after Ronaldo failed to convert his spot-kick.
Boro had looked limited but the hosts’ profligacy hurt them and Watmore crossed for fellow former United youth player Crooks to score in front of the raucous travelling Teessiders.
Most inside the stadium expected the goal to be ruled out for Watmore’s handball in the build-up, but it was apparently deemed accidental by both referee and VAR.
Fernandes inexplicably managed to hit a post with the goal at his mercy and the match went to extra-time and then penalties, with Elanga’s missed spot-kick the difference.
