Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland was brought to a halt after former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed to the floor.

Eriksen, who now plays for Inter Milan, was being resuscitated on the pitch by medical staff with players and fans in tears before the match was postponed.

He was evacuated off the pitch on a stretcher and medical staff will continue to treat him. It appeared that he was conscious as he was carried away.

Eriksen collapsed to the floor as a throw-in was taken towards him with no one near him.

Players around him immediately called for play to be stopped and medical staff rushed onto the field after the referee blew his whistle.

There was serious concern on the players from both nations, with Martin Braithwaite praying and Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel biting his hand.

Danish players were in tears as medical staff attempted to resusitate him and Eriksen’s partner was consoled by Schmeichel and Danish captain Simon Kjaer.

In the BBC studio, Gary Lineker said: ‘It’s one of the most distressing scenes I think I’ve ever seen at a football match. Christian Eriksen falling to the ground, his team-mates surrounding him.

‘I’m clearly distraught and both his team-mates and the Finland team. Football truly put into perspective. I think the only thing I can remember remotely like that is Fabrice Muamba, he pulled through.Lets hope for his sake that Christian pulls through as well. So distressing.’

Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas added: ‘I don’t even know what to say really. My body is shaking.

‘All I can think is about Christian’s family, what they must be going through. It’s a very, very sad moment we’re going through and I pray for the very best.’

Alex Scott, the former Arsenal player, continued: ‘I’m getting emotional because I can’t believe it.

‘Everyone at home, what we’re witnessing and like you said Gary, I think football totally goes out the window. You’re thinking about his family, all the rest of the players out there witnessing it as well.

‘I just got on my phone and messaged my mum telling her I love her. And I think it’s a reminder of how quickly life can change just like that.’
