Edo police command issues public advisory over emerging bomb threat for extortion

The Edo State Police Command has alerted corporate organizations and members of the public on emerging anonymous bomb threats for extortion by yet-to-be-identified con men.

The Command gave the alert in a public advisory issued on Monday by its Assistant Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem.

The advisory noted that the Command is actively investigating what it described as clear attempts at extortion through fear and intimidation.

“The Edo State Police Command has observed a disturbing crime trend involving anonymous callers threatening individuals, business owners, and corporate organizations in Edo State, with claims that explosive devices have been planted within their premises. The callers then demand money, threatening to detonate the alleged explosives if their demands are not met.

“These acts are clear attempts at extortion through fear and intimidation, and the Command is actively investigating reported cases,” Ikoedem said.

In view of the development, the advisory urged members of the public to take note of the following:

“Do not panic or succumb to any financial demands from such callers as the Command boasts of a competent Explosive Ordinance Department capable of detecting explosives and deactivating same.

“Immediately report all such calls or messages to the nearest police station or directly to the Command’s Control Room 08077773721, 08037646272.

“Avoid circulating unverified information or creating unnecessary panic within the community.

“Remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons, objects, or movements around your environment”.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has directed the deployment of specialized units, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, Intelligence Bureau, and Tactical Teams, to promptly respond to all reported threats and ensure public safety.

“The Command is also working closely with telecommunication service providers and relevant security agencies to track and apprehend those behind these criminal acts.

“The Edo State Police Command is fully committed to protecting lives, property, and economic activities within the state. Citizens are assured that every report will be treated with utmost urgency and professionalism,” Ikoedem concluded.
