CGM FC’s FAIRYTALE START TO THE SEASON 7 PROSPERITY CUP

Church of God mission FC (CGM FC) came into the spotlight after beating the highly-rated Bayelsa FA on Tuesday in the penultimate round of the Prosperity Cup at the Ogboloma centre. It was a spectacular game, with exemplary display of resilience and determination from the CGM players, a team whose story began long before this star moment.

Founded in 2015, the Igbogene based-team has shelved a few trophies in their cabinet, most notably the Mbiama Peace Cup (2019) and most recently, the Bayelsa Church Tournament (2022). Their most impressive run in the prosperity cup occured in the 2022 edition when they made it to the round of 16 for the first time in their history. With a few modifications to that squad, it seems CGM is looking to replicate a similar feat this season.

CGM has brought in Onduku Sunny, the younger brother to Onduku Gomo, who played for Bayelsa United, Super Eagles and several other teams in Europe. It has the record for the fastest goal scored in this season’s competition and an amazing goal catalog which includes the second goal against Kingdom Stars which was scored directly from a corner kick.

Speaking in a post-match interview after a hard-fought win over Kingdom Stars of Akenfa, head coach Pere, described his team as one that “was on a mission to win the 10 million naira prize money if possible, but are taking the games one at a time.” Some would refer to this statement as one portraying lofty ambitions, but he has however, backed it up in the pitch with his ability to employ a nasty low block and to switch to a more dynamic attack styles when necessary.

Their first game of the season, an outstanding four nil victory over Salvation ministries Obunagha, was were the belief was birthed. That belief metamorphosed into confidence after they overcame Kingdom stars. They must have heaved a sigh of relief when the referee cancelled a BFA goal for an offside in their third game. It would have been the first time that they’d have been trailing in this competition.

With each game, their fanbase have grown, and they basically occupied all the seats at their stand in the last game they played against Bayelsa FA and when they scored their second goal there was a deafening cheer, a testament of how the team has won the hearts of both football lovers in Ogboloma and the day one fans, the congregation of the Church of God mission.

CGM FC have a tough nut to crack on Friday when they take on former prosperity cup champions Eternal Grace Ministries (EGM), who are also undefeated in this campaign. The Friday game would be the last in the Ogboloma centre, and will decide who represents the centre in the battle for the Yenagoa LGA.
