Cameron Norrie ‘happy’ with start at his favorite tournament Estoril
British tennis star Cameron Norrie was happy with the way he started his campaign at the Estoril Open. On Tuesday, world No. 50 Norrie demolished home favorite Joao Sousa 6-1 6-3 to safely progress into the Estoril round-of-16.
Norrie had a break point in the opening game of the match but Sousa saved to take a 1-0 lead. After losing a tight first game, Norrie absolutely dominated Sousa in the rest of the set as he claimed three breaks and lost no service games to win the opener.
Sousa had a break point to start the second set on a perfect way but Norrie saved. Sousa paid the price for not taking his chance as Norrie claimed a break in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Sousa saved four break points in the fourth game but it didn’t change much as Norrie served out for the match in the ninth game.
“I think I’m playing some of my best clay-court tennis. I had a good week last week,” Norrie told Amazon Prime Video. “It’s just nice to get some matches on the clay, especially leading in before the French Open and some of the bigger tournaments.
I’m just trying to progress and get one per cent better every match.”
Norrie enjoys playing in Estoril
Norrie, a former world No. 41, is making his second main draw appearance in Estoril. Norrie debuted at the Estoril Open in 2018, when he made the round-of-16 before losing to Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.
“Estoril is my favorite tournament. I love seaside towns and this place is amazing,” Norrie said, per the tournament’s Twitter account. Norrie plays next against Pedro Martinez, who handed a 6-3 6-0 loss to No.
5 seed Alexander Bublik. Martinez claimed a total of four breaks throughout the match and lost no service games to earn a comfortable win over Bublik. It remains to be seen if Norrie can beat qualifier Martinez and reach the Estoril quarterfinal.
