CAF Women’s Champions League – CECAFA qualifiers: Yei Joint Stars register first victory

South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars recorded their first win at the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA qualifiers after beating Djibouti’s FAD FC 2-0 on Friday.

Yei, who lost their opener 3-0 to Uganda’s Kampala Queens, produced an improved performance at FUFA Technical Center in Njeru, Uganda.

A 13th-minute own goal from FAD goalkeeper Soubane Ahmed Omar, following a defensive mix-up, gave Yei the perfect start.

Djibouti captain Yousra Mohamed Issa organised her side defensively as Yei pressed for more goals. FAD’s Rahma Moustapha Aden missed a clear chance to equalise after the break.

Substitute Justine Eunice Kilega finally sealed Yei’s 2-0 win in the 90th minute.

“I’m glad the players worked hard after the first defeat to get this win today,” said a delighted Yei coach Abdallah Loi Umar.

In Group A’s other game, Kampala Queens snatched a late 1-1 draw against table-toppers Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) FC.

CBE captain Loza Abera put her side ahead after just two minutes thanks to poor Kampala defending.

The Ugandans withstood late pressure to equalise through substitute Zaina Nandede deep into added time.

“Although we should have defended better, I’m happy we got a point against strong opponents. We must now win our last game against Yei to qualify,” said CBE’s Abera.

The draw leaves CBE top on seven points, with Buja Queens of Burundi second on three points. Kampala and Yei also have three points each.

On Saturday, Group B leaders Vihiga Queens of Kenya face Tanzania’s JKT Queens in a clash that will decide who finishes first.

Celline Wafula Girls of Tanzania play AS Kigali Women of Rwanda in the other Group B match.
