Brighton 1-0 Tottenham: Player ratings as Leandro Trossard gives Seagulls win over shocking Spurs
Brighton secured a much needed 1-0 win over a lacklustre Tottenham on Sunday night, thanks to a first half goal from Leandro Trossard.
The hosts started well and went ahead in the 17th minute. Alexis Mac Allister was heavily involved in the opener, slipping a through ball to Pascal Gross, who then squared it for Trossard to convert.
The Seagulls‘ dominance continued, with Tottenham mustering just one shot in the entire first half. After the break, Spurs continued to struggle in the final third, with Aaron Connolly going closest to scoring only to be denied by a last-ditch Toby Alderweireld block.
Here are your player ratings for both sides from the south coast clash.
BRIGHTON
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Robert Sanchez (GK) – 7/10 – Made one excellent save in the second half. Looked a bit shaky with the ball at his feet.
Ben White (CB) – 7/10 – So nearly scored a scrappy goal just after the break. Did not put a foot wrong defensively.
Lewis Dunk (CB) – 7/10 – Went close from a header in the first half. Marshalled the backline expertly.
Adam Webster (CB) – 8/10 – Cool, calm and collected. He was always in the right place, registering five interceptions.
2. Wing Backs & Midfielders
Joel Veltman (RWB) – 7/10 – Extremely solid and also played his part in the attacking phase.
Pascal Gross (CM) – 8/10 – Hit the post early on before showing great movement and vision to create the first goal. Finished the match with five key passes.
Yves Bissouma (CM) – 7/10 – Broke things up effectively throughout, racking up six interceptions.
Alexis Mac Allister (CM) – 8/10 – A strong creative force. His through ball led to the game’s opener, but he was guilty of some trigger happy shooting.
Solly March (LWB) – 7/10 – Showed superb energy down the left-hand side and made four tackles. Final ball was good as well.
3. Forwards
Neal Maupay (ST) – 7/10 – Popped up in some promising areas and held up the ball effectively.
Leandro Trossard (ST) – 7/10 – Finished well early on, although the chance was fairly simple. Was a real livewire throughout.
4. Substitutes
Adam Lallana – 6/10 – Helped see things out with his experience.
Aaron Connolly – 5/10 – Lots of energy but missed an absolute sitter.
TOTTENHAM
5. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Hugo Lloris (GK) – 6/10 – Made one very smart save just after the break. Not much he could do about the goal.
Joe Rodon (CB) – 6/10 – Needed to get out quicker for the first goal. Other than that, he did okay.
Toby Alderweireld (CB) – 6/10 – Made a few important interventions, including a world class block at the end. His passing was pretty poor though. A lot of ‘hit and hope’ long balls.
Davinson Sanchez (CB) – 5/10 – Put in a below average display before being replaced at half time to allow Spurs to restructure.
6. Wing Backs & Midfielders
Moussa Sissoko (RWB) – 5/10 – He worked hard but struggled in an unfamiliar role. Crossing was a particular lowlight.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CM) – 5/10 – Did not impose himself on proceedings for one of the first times this season.
Tanguy Ndombele (CM) – 6/10 – Spurs’ best player by some distance before the break. Faded somewhat as things progressed.
Ben Davies (LWB) – 5/10 – Badly exposed for the game’s first goal. His lack of quality on the ball hurt his side going forward.
7. Forward
Gareth Bale (RW) – 5/10 – Pretty shocking. His performance lacked intensity and it is clear he is still not anywhere near fully fit.
Son Heung-min (ST) – 5/10 – Brighton did well to deny him space to run into, forcing him deep to collect the ball. In possession he lacked invention.
Steven Bergwijn (LW) – 5/10 – Had the honour of taking Tottenham’s only shot of the first half. Negligible impact other than that.
8. Substitutes
Carlos Vinicius – 6/10 – Managed to fire off a few shots after coming on a half time.
Lucas Moura – 6/10 – Had one shot during his cameo.
Erik Lamela – 6/10 – Nothing of note to report other than a tame free kick.
